Adenoid Cystic Carcinoma is a rare form of cancer, primarily found in the salivary gland.

 

There is little known research about the cause, however, it is an aggressive, slow growing type of cancer that is treated primarily with surgery and radiation therapy.

 

This type of cancer is considered a chronic condition, due to its high rate of reoccurrence, often with no symptoms or significant signs.

I was recently diagnosed with this type of cancer, and my case was one of the more complex cases on record. I had no signs or symptoms until finding a nodule located at the base of my parotid gland that appeared without warning.

 

Within days of feeling this nodule I was undergoing scans and tests to determine what the root cause of this was.

 

Then I was given the news that nobody ever wants to hear or see, it was cancer.

 

Due to the location of the tumor being in the deep lobe of the parotid gland, attacking the facial nerves, and growing into the jugular space, it was suggested that surgery be done immediately to remove the tumor to prevent it from further compromising my essential functions.

 

It was a complex and very delicate procedure, with a multitude of potential complications. I was fortunate enough to be in the hands of an experienced and expert surgeon, who carefully removed the tumor, but had to sacrifice the facial nerves on the right side of my face due to then being so damaged and engulfed by the tumor.

 

It was the safest way to ensure all of the cancer was removed. Due to the aggressive nature of this type of cancer, I will be undergoing radiation therapy.

The gratitude I have for my surgical team could never be effectively put into words, they worked diligently and quickly to provide me with the opportunity for the best possible outcome.

 

I retained each of my senses, but was left with facial paralysis on the right side of my face due to the nerves being removed.

 

Fortunately, extensive measures were taken to ensure maximum symmetry and aesthetic balance, but there is still a road ahead.

 

Facial reanimating, life long maintenance of the skin grafting sections, combined with a quality skincare routine will be key for maximizing the quality and longevity of my face.

 

While this has been a major change to my overall appearance, I am grateful for my health, healing, and ability to assist others in their own journey through my own story.
